Toussaint Louverture’s story resonates deeply with me as both an artist and a Haitian-American. His life embodies the very essence of resilience, creativity, and the fight for justice. Creating a portrait of him using colorful candies is my way of celebrating his vibrant legacy—a legacy rooted in the richness of Haitian culture, the sweetness of liberation, and the spectrum of hope and unity that his story inspires.

The candies symbolize diversity and the beauty of bringing together many colors to create something extraordinary. Just as Toussaint united people across divides to fight for freedom, I see this art piece as a mosaic of strength, resilience, and a celebration of the Haitian spirit. Each candy is a small yet powerful reminder of the countless individuals who fought alongside him, of the dreams they had for a better world, and of the sacrifices they made for the freedom we cherish today.

This piece is my love letter to Haiti, to its history, and to the unyielding strength of my ancestors. Toussaint’s journey reminds us all that even when faced with insurmountable odds, we have the power to rise, to lead, and to transform the world.
